Astronomy Magnet Modules

Interactive, classroom-ready Astronomy Magnet Modules that help students model core astronomy and earth science concepts using magnetic manipulatives. Designed to support active learning, these modules allow students to build, move, and revise models as they explore Earth–Sun–Moon relationships, planetary motion, stars, and large-scale cosmic structure—supported by teacher guides and student handouts.

Why Astronomy Magnets Work

Model astronomical systems step-by-step instead of memorizing diagrams and facts

  • Make invisible motions and relationships visible through movement and spatial reasoning

  • Encourage student discussion, collaboration, and scientific explanation

  • Support whole-class modeling and individual practice

  • Reinforce concepts already taught in your astronomy / earth science curriculum

Astronomy Modules (A1–A3)

EdMagZ® Astronomy Magnet Modules include three hands-on curricula designed to support astronomy and earth science instruction across a range of grade levels and courses. Module A1 is commonly used in middle school and introductory earth science classes, and is also well suited for more advanced courses, focusing on Earth–Sun–Moon relationships and planetary motion as students use magnetic models to explore rotation, revolution, gravity, light, and perspective through phenomena such as day and night, seasons, lunar phases, eclipses, tides, and planetary orbits. Module A2 is often incorporated into high school astronomy and advanced science courses, where students construct and interpret a Hertzsprung–Russell diagram to compare stellar temperature, luminosity, classification, and stages of stellar evolution using real data. Module A3 supports instruction at multiple levels, from middle school through high school and beyond, as students build scaled physical models of galaxies, galaxy groups, clusters, and superclusters to develop an intuitive understanding of cosmic distance, scale, and the large-scale structure of the universe. By physically placing, moving, and revising models, these modules make abstract spatial relationships and cosmic-scale processes easier to understand, discuss, and explain.

Teacher Sets
Whole-class instruction on a classroom whiteboard

Teacher Sets are designed for whole-class instruction using a standard classroom whiteboard. The larger pieces are easy for all students to see, even from the back of the room.

The components match the Student Sets exactly, allowing teachers to model processes, pathways, and structures on the board while students follow along at their desks. This shared visual language helps reinforce understanding and keeps lessons aligned.

Teacher Sets are ideal for direct instruction, guided practice, and whole-class demonstrations.

Recommended whiteboard size: 36 × 48 inches or larger

Student Sets
Individual and small-group modeling at desks

Student Sets are scaled for individual or small-group use at desks or tables. They are ideal for partner work, tutoring, stations, and homeschooling.

The pieces match the Teacher Sets exactly—just at a smaller size—so students can mirror classroom models while working at their desks. This alignment allows students to follow demonstrations in real time, build the same models independently, and actively demonstrate their thinking through movement and revision.

Student Set bundles of 6 modules or more receive a 10% discount. Discounted pricing appears automatically in the shop.

Recommended whiteboard size: 18 × 24 inches or larger
